Friedrich Nietzsche publishes in 1871 "The birth of Greek tragedy" which highlights, among other things, that the history of ancient Greece is an interplay between the Apollonian and the Dionysian.
He flips the classic interpretation that Greek art is essentially Apollonian, thus expression of balance, harmony and measure. He also highlights another aspect of Greek civilization, the one linked to Dionysus, the Greek god symbol of chaos,of orgiastic drunkness,
Of the vitality unleashed that knows no limits and measures. And the moment when these two gods, Apollo and Dionysus, manage to find a balance is the one of Greek tragedy of Aeschylus and Sophocles. This balance then breaks especially with the prevalence appearance of rational and concealment of Dionysian side ..
This concept linked to the interpretation of art can be extended to our daily lives. The man is poised between two or more emotions, he is always in a delicate step, in a hazardous environment. Its location is never easy, he is a tightrope imprisoned in constant tension between his Dionysian side and the Apollonian one.
But you have really to choose? Or you have really to find a balance?....
